What Makes Fine Art Functional

If he or she has had the proper formal training from the beginning, and if he or she has made the appropriate applications in accordance with the craft, then the commercial artist of today will surely appreciate the romantic side to fine art. Needless to say, there is today a distinct difference between fine and commercial art. Today’s commercial art practitioners are mostly applying their minds, skills and talents online. It is in graphic design work, utilizing some of the finest software tools ever created, where the commercial demand lies today.

But in appreciating the niceties of fine art, perhaps the question could still be asked whether there is still a place in the commercial space for fine art. The easy answer to that, more so, a positive response, is that, yes, there is. Fine art in all its manifestations and utilizing so many different materials, can have its place in the commercial sun if it qualifies itself as functional fine art. How does one define what is known as functional fine art then? Well, in layman’s terms then. Functional fine art serves a purpose.

Well, more than one purpose obviously. The design intention is to always attract the notice of others, whether they be merely curious onlookers or targeted customers. The purpose behind functional art could be to prompt people who view art into action, whether they do so purposely themselves or act out of the subconscious. Art for art’s sake, that should always be the case. Perhaps it would not be stretching it in imagining that the most dedicated among graphic design artists have designs or dreams of one day spending tranquil days in the countryside painting picturesque landscapes of still lives. Ah, that would be fine art indeed.
